Assignment Submission

Every applicant is required to submit an assignment with their application form and other supporting documents. The assignment is an opportunity to let your creativity shine, and connect your education back to your community.

The Assignment:

Familiarize yourself with the 
Seven Co-operative Principles:

  2. Democratic Member Control

  3. Member Economic Participation

  4. Autonomy and Independence

  5. Education and Training

  6. Co-operation Among Co-operatives

  7. Concern for Community

PART ONE:

Choose a Co-op Principle and define it in your own words.

PART TWO:

(a) Give an example of that principle in action at your community or local Co-op;

or

(b) Give an example of how you carry this principle into your work or daily life.

Submitting Your Assignment

You are free to explore different formats for your assignment submission! We will accept your assignment in the forms of: essays, poetry or storytelling, original artwork, video recording, and audio recording.

When you complete your application form, you will have the opportunity to attach files or share a URL for your assignment submission. Depending on your choice of format, how you attach your assignment may vary. See below for additional details.

Essay’s should be 2-3 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman and 12 pt font. Length of the essay should be no less than 1000 words. External sources should be included on a separate references page.

How to submit: Near the end of the application form you will see the ability to attach files. Essay’s will be accepted in either .doc or .pdf format.

If you would like to take a creative approach to the assignment, you may be interested in submitting a poem or other creative writing.

How to submit: All creative writing submissions must come with an accompanying artist’s statement at a minimum length of 100 words. Near the end of the submission form you will see the ability to attach files. Artist statements can either be included in the same document as your assignment submission or as a separate document. Written works and artist’s statements will be accepted in either .doc or .pdf format. 

Applicants are welcome to respond to the assignment by creating a original piece of artwork. Submissions could include drawings, paintings, print, or photos of craft, beadwork, carving, etc.

Preparing your art submission: Please provide the best quality scan or photo of your artwork that you are looking to submit. Image files should be no larger than:

1350×1350 pixels or 22.86×22.86 cm or 9 x 9 inches
With a resolution of maximum 150 DPI

How to submit: All artwork submissions must come with an accompanying artist’s statement at a minimum length of 100 words. Near the end of the submission form you will see the ability to attach files. Artist’s statements will be accepted in either .doc or .pdf format. Images will be accepted in either .jpg or .pdf format.

If you wish to create a video to respond, please ensure that no copyright content is included in your submission. A video may be a work of art, performance, a short film, or an interview. Any video submissions violating the copyrights or privacy rights of others will not be accepted. This includes any copywritten music, and the use of copywritten TV or movie clips within your work.

Video submissions should be no longer than 3 minutes in length, and be the standard Youtube format (16:9 aspect ratio).

How to submit: Videos should be uploaded via Youtube. Simply make a Google account and you will be able to access their site and use their video uploader platform to upload your video.

Once your video is uploaded, you can paste the link in the appropriate box at the end of the application form. Video submissions should also be accompanied by an artist’s statement at a minimum length of 100 words. Artist’s statements will be accepted in either .doc or .pdf format.

Applicants are also encouraged to submit audio recordings as a response to the assignment. This could look like writing and recording a song, reciting a poem, telling a story, or interviewing someone. Any audio submissions violating the copyrights or privacy rights of others will not be accepted. This includes any copywritten music, or the use of samples that are not considered fair use.

Audio submissions should be no longer than 3 minutes in length.

How to submit: Audio recordings should be uploaded via Soundcloud. Simply make a Soundcloud Account and upload your audio using their platform. Once your audio is uploaded, you can paste the link in the appropriate box at the end of the application form. Audio submissions should also be accompanied by a artist’s statement at a minimum length of 100 words. Artist’s statements will be accepted in either .doc or .pdf format.

Files attached to the application form cannot exceed a total of 4 MB, applicants are also welcome to share a link to a Dropbox or Google folder via the URL field in the application form.
